Foreword

This is a remarkable book written by an amazing woman. The author has managed to convey her love and reverence for family by sharing anecdotes about herself and her mother that underpin the practical needs of care planning and caregiving. Families who so desperately need the information in this book will see that care can be provided with dignity and confidence. Caregivers will better understand why it is so important to get to know the care receiver and that person's family.

I suspect that Caring for Your Loved One Who is Ill at Home will be a strong support source for families of care receivers because it is not only easy to read but has so many suggestions to ease daily living. This book should also be required reading in every classroom that prepares home healthcare workers, sitters, and volunteers in aspects of home caregiving. Faculties in schools of nursing could avail themselves of a unique opportunity to better understand a major subset of nursing care and care planning.

As a nurse and a family caregiver, I found myself wishing that this book had been written seven years ago when my husband had a stroke. I would have felt less alone. We must all be indebted to the author who has provided us with a labor of love that is a positive direction for families and caregivers at home.

What Others are Saying about the Book

This practical guide is an exceptional resource, not only for substitute teachers, but also for teachers and administrators. Nearly everything a substitute teacher needs to know is in I Come to Teach! With this book, substitutes will learn how to apply and interview for a position in a school district; plan for the substitute teaching experience, teach the regular teacher's lesson plan; use specific teaching strategies to promote student learning; develop filler activities; manage student behavior in the classroom; and assess one's own performance at the end of the day. I am impressed with the comprehensive nature of this book and believe every substitute should have a copy. Principals should also have a copy of this book for daily use, along with the Substitute Teacher Booster Bag that Geneva Cannon discusses in the guide.
